Camden Arts Centre - Image Concious Project
Currently: Launch of Image Conscious Digital
Book
Camden Arts Centre has launched a digital
book documenting the innovative youth mentoring programme
Image Conscious. Established in partnership
with Camden Youth and Connexions Service,
Image Conscious matched nine artists with
thirty Camden residents aged thirteen to eighteen. It offered
personalised support to young people confronting difficulties
in their school, family or social life. Making videos, exhibitions,
performances and a publication, they explored shared interests
with artists including Faisal Abdu’Allah,
David Blandy, Serena Korda,
Gordon McKenna, Tara Sampy,
Othello De’Souza-Hartley, Raine
Smith, Victoria Rothschild and Tomas
Vanek.
‘Working with the artist was the most stimulating thing
I’ve ever done.’ Shannette Ellington (Participant
2003-2005)
An independent evaluative report on Image Conscious
has been produced by the Open University
and Camden Arts Centre’s youth programme
now continues with Viewfinder, a project
with young people from Kilburn Youth Centre
and Camden Leaving Care, funded by the Local
Network Fund.

Message to the world! (future plans): Viewfinder
provides an opportunity to continue the relationship with
these young people. It will develop a positive dialogue with
a group aged 16- 19 who would not normally visit Camden
Arts Centre. In a series of sessions with artists
and peer mentors the participants will work together looking
at Camden Arts Centre’s appeal to young
people and investigate ways to communicate and engage. They
will create a video to be screened in a special event at Camden
Arts Centre and various local venues. The project
will offer related training sessions to artists. It will be
a springboard for a longer programme collaborating with young
people, providing them with a sense of ownership and belonging
in relation to public spaces such as Camden Arts Centre.
